layover
- Definition:
- The dreadful time between cases wherein an operating room is unavailable due to inappropriately prepared patients, unavailability of surgeons, insufficient nursing staff, anesthesiologists, or OR assignment to emergency surgery, congestion of the postanesthesia care unit, and delay in transport to the OR as well as surgical cases running longer than their scheduled time (spill-over).
- Usage:
- Doc to P.A.: "I could be home watching Weeds right now if we didn't have this damn two hour layover!"
leave 'em dead
- Definition:
- Levophed. Levophed is used as a vasopressor medication for patients with critical hypotension. At high doses, and especially when it is combined with other vasopressors, it can lead to limb ischemia and limb death. Norepinephrine is mainly used to treat patients in vasodilatory shock states such as septic shock and neurogenic shock and has shown a survival benefit over dopamine. Any patient in need of levo is in trouble.
- Usage:
- The "leave 'em dead" didn't help. He passed away last night.
levo
- Definition:
- Potent catecholamine that's released in the body naturally when sympathetic nervous system is stimulated. Ex. If a patient's anxious, having pain, scared, upset. All this causes sympathetic nervous system stimulation.
- Usage:
- My grandma's UTI led to her septic shock. They have her on a levo drip now. If she misses Thanksgiving, who's going to make the giblet gravy?
low blood
- Definition:
- Anemia. It's is a decrease in normal number of red blood cells or less than the normal quantity of hemoglobin in the blood. However, it can include decreased oxygen-binding ability of each hemoglobin molecule due to deformity or lack in numerical development as in some other types of hemoglobin deficiency.
- Usage:
- My patient has low blood.
