c-spine
- Definition:
- Cervical spine. The c-spine begins at the base of the skull and is comprised of seven vertebrae. The individual cervical vertebrae are commonly abbreviated C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6 and C7.
- Usage:
- Dave was rear ended at about 25 mph. His CT came back negative for any fractures, but we're still awaiting the results of his c-spine MRI.
Cadillac Plan
- Definition:
- Any health insurance plan with premiums higher than $8,000 for individuals or $21,000 for families. Legislation is calling for an increase in taxes on these high-cost insurance plans.
These figures include everything you and your employer spend on health care except for the deductible: premiums for medical (the portions paid by you and by your employer), dental, and vision coverage, as well as any money you put into a flexible spending account, which allows you to set aside pretax money to cover medical costs. Since your pay stub may show only your personal contribution—not that of your employer.

cafe coronary
- Definition:
- Café coronary has nothing to do with having a heart attack. It refers to someone choking; specifically while eating and drinking, often engaged in talking at the same time.
- Usage:
- Can you believe that new resident had a cafe coronary during lunch? Luckily, we just had a refresher on the Heimlich earlier in the day.
candyman
- Definition:
- ER doctors who liberally prescribe pain medicine--usually Vicodin or Percocet--to any patient who comes in complaining of pain. For the regulars, the doctor/patient relationship is more reminiscent of that of dealer/addict.
- Usage:
- Dave, the new ER doc, is the latest candyman. He's handing out Vicodin like a stoner at Bonnaroo.
cap gas
- Definition:
- Capillary blood gas. Blood gases are measured from an arterial blood sample to evaluate the respiratory adequacy and oxygen status of the critically ill patient; however in neonates and children, the wish to minimize iatrogenic blood loss has made capillary blood a practical alternative to arterial blood.
- Usage:
- What's her cap gas look like?
catcher's mask
- Definition:
- A device used for patients with bleeding varices in the throat that provides for a tube with two balloons attached to be positioned in the throat and inflated. The pressure of the balloons is then transferred to the enlarged veins to quell the bleeding.
- Usage:
- We have to use a catcher's mask to prevent further bleeding, so do you think you can give me a hand, Johnny Bench?
cell Samaritan
- Definition:
- A person who calls 911 on a cell phone to report a public safety occurrence without physically contributing any useful aid to the resolution of the problem. CSs assuage their consciences by doing something without effort or involvement or direct assistance.
- Usage:
- We had a cell Samaritan call in a school bus that slid off the ice-slicked road and careened into a frozen lake. Apparently he remained in his car as the children were frantically trying to escape their yellow tomb. Nice guy.
